Brian Cracknell
Brian, 53, is a UK national who has lived and worked in Malaysia for the last 25 years. He has a BA in History and Russian Studies, and an MA in Linguistics and English Language Teaching from the University of Leeds. He also has an M.B.A. from Henley Management College.
For 30 years he has been a learner, adviser, trainer, facilitator and educator. For the last 12 years he has been Director of his own company. He has designed and taught language, communication skills, trainer training, management and leadership programmes in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. These programmes include Persuasive Writing for Impact, Engaging Presentations, Making Project Teams Work, Engaging Dialogue and an innovative trilogy of experiential learning programmes: Get Your Act Together, Time 2 Act, and Leading Role.
Brian’s major interests are creativity, dialogue, writing, travel, theatre and running. In this regard, he has authored books for varied audiences on subjects including history, Malaysian architecture and how to get around Moscow. In 1999, he interviewed and wrote profiles of Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Malaysia chapter’s leaders in their commemorative publication Profiles in Leadership.
From 1994 to 2002, Brian wrote fortnightly columns, Down to Business and Business Wise, for the New Straits Times. In these he reviewed business and management books, while reflecting on their relevance to the Malaysian business scene. Intermittently, he has contributed articles to other local newspapers and magazines for the past 20 years, including Developing Dialogue (a series of interviews of successful Malaysian businesswomen) as well as pieces for magazines and newspapers. In addition, he was the Series Editor in 1999 and 2000 for the Down to Business Mnimax publications by Falcon Press, Malaysia.
Brian is currently Director of Language Works, and specialises in customising learning experiences and support for organisations. Previously he was Visiting Lecturer at the International Islamic University, and Head - Business Communication at British Council, Kuala Lumpur, where he set up the Business Communication Unit.
He is a lead assessor for the International Project Management Association (IPMA) Project Management Excellence Award. He is also a City & Guilds ACE (Teaching, Training and Assessing) trainer and assesor.
Brian strongly believes in applying creative concepts and improvisational techniques to learning and performance improvement. In this regard, he works closely with other creative trainers and facilitators to develop and deliver learning experiences. He also co-wrote, with Asma Abdullah, the cross-cultural edutainments Expat Comes to Town: Cross-cultural Cameos and The eXpat Files: Managing in Malaysia, subsequently adapted for clients’ skills development programmes.
